Just a few hours ago, I turned 24!

Well, it’s that time of the year when I feel so happy and so depressed
at the same time.

Depressed because I feel much older and because I am not (yet) as famous
as

I thought I would be when I was 12 🙂

Happy because I am so grateful to be still alive, safe and healthy.

But because I look on the bright side of life, I will make today a happy
day for me and enjoy being like fine wine: better with age.

One of my childhood friend, Stéphane Pellé has been signed by NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers! Congratulations to him and his family. May he be blessed in his basketball career and for goodness sake, don’t put yourself in a similar situation that a Laker team member is in at the mo.

Just for the record, Stéphane Pellé and I don’t really keep in touch no more. As a matter of fact, the last time we spoke was around 10 years ago when he left our school to go try his luck in the USA. Now, he’s succeded. I am so very happy for him.

But O brother, the amount of new “friends” and “cousins” he’s gonna make now!

What an eventful week this past week has been! So event filled and I am pretty happy with the course it took.

Monday 11th

Went to the gym as usual and noticed that I could lift more weight than the previous month. For me it’s a great victory ‘cos it means that I am getting stronger. Now, just need to add some more meat on dem bones 🙂

The heat was a killer. People are dying from heat all over Europe especially France. Do you imagine that in less than a week, more people have died from heat than the WTC 11th nasty bombing? Scaary times we’re in.

Worked hard on my businesses. Now, there is no time to slack off, I need to make more money faster. Not because I am spending beyond my means but because I have expensive pass times and I want to pay now and play later than the opposite. I am trying to avoid the whole credit card lifestyle like the plague.

Tuesday

Worked some more and then went to watch S.W.A.T. The movie is OK. I’d give a 5 out of 10. But, it was an afternoon well wasted 🙂

Went to meet some people that I had an appointement with but made the ultimate blunder. I forgot what floor or suite they were on. So although I found the building easily, I could not get in ‘cos I did not where to go! I was pretty mad at myself so I decided to just walk around Montreal a bit and do some sight seeing.

Wednesday

Met the Gotsoul crew. Just in case you don’t know, it’s a young but very reputable music label. No, they don’t release pop music but fine house music.

I had great fun there and they showed me how they run things and gave some samples (free records in other words 😉

In the evening, I went out by myself for the first time. I went to check out some DJs from Toronto that were playing.

Thurdsday

Worked on music and demos to hand out to promoters as well as a quick portfolio as there are job prospects here. It’s amazing, people have heard of me and they are calling me and asking to hire my services. Of course, now they are not worth the while as I make triple what they pay. So, it’s a no brainer that there is no way I am going to take a job where I wake up early to get to work, wear a tie and sit in traffic while I could wake up at 10 as I do, fiddle around the computer for maybe three hours and go get busy with other stuff.

Of course, there’s always a good offer and there seem to be one in the pipeline. But in this case, money is not really a motivation…

In the evening went to see my new DJ friends play at their respective clubs. Since I only drink water, I go out and spend money on nothing because I am on everyone guestlist which is a money saving ptivilege

For once I was dancing. Yes, that’s how good the music is. And to say that soon it will be my turn to grace the decks…. I can’t wait!

Frida

Woke up to realize that there was no milk for my cereals. Took a walk outside and I ended up missing my bus to the gym. So, I went back to bed and went to the gym later on which turned out to be a bad idea because I was still tired. But the workout was good.

During the day, I spoke to some business partners, consulted with some clients and every single time I wanted to go to sleep, the phone kept ringing. Eventually, I just unplugged the sucker and went to bed.

In the evening, I went out to a club where another DJ friend was playing. This was a rather posh place and for some weird reasons, I did not feel out of place. This place reminded me of Barbarella where Tim and I DJed. Of course the only difference with the people there was that I caught the metro whereas everybody came by Porsche or Ferrari or whatever…

Strange…. it’s starting to get chilly at night… For the first time this summer, I closed my door and slept with my wondows half closed.

Saturday

Took it easy. Watched football and Ousmane, my host (soon to be flatmate once I start paying the rent) made a wonderful meal. These west African boys are well raised by their mothers as they know how to cook! I am not saying that my mom did not raise me well, I guess that I am just not interested in cooking.

In the evening, yup, guess what? I went out again! I went alone again. I did not know the DJs this time so I got bored out of my tree. It sucks being in a place where you know no one. But the music was top notch. At around 3 Am the streets were packed as usual and due to the traffic on the roads I ended up going to bed at 5AM.

Sunday

Today. I am writing this. The chocolate I ate is making me run to the loo every 5 minutes. Due to my diet, I have become sugar intolerant if such a term exists.

This week, I am going to focus on business. I need to buy more music, more DJ equipment and more music. I hope to meet more people and blend into the Montreal house scene.

So nice to see you if you have received my email a while ago subtly promoting this site 🙂 Well, do have fun sneak peeking into my life. Please note that it goes backwards. By this I mean that the most recent post will be above the previous day’s. By default, I update this journal on a daily basis (since 60% of my time is spent on the net) so to be the very first to know my news, check back often .

Today was a rather boring day. The reason? The sky did open and I was stuck indoors. So, I did do some work and made a few phone calls to network with the local DJ/ House music community.

Police Car :o)

Why in the world am I adding a picture of an Ottawa police car on my website?

Well, for the first time in more than 10 years, I don’t have to fear the police. Not that I am a criminal or any thing of the sort but just because in the last country I lived the police was pretty hostile to immigrants. They called me names, nearly sent me to jail accusing me of being there illegaly and the whole nonsense trying to get a bribe from me or whatever their reasons.

So here, it feels good to mind your own business and a police car does not slow down so that the officer can check your every move…

You probably have no idea of what I mean, but you need to understand what I have been through. So, if you are into psyco analysis (hope I am using the right term here), you could say that this is my way of letting go 🙂

Since Tuesday the 15th of July, I have traveled quite a bit. I have sat in planes and cars for hours and hours so I was wondering how many kilometres (or miles) I have covered so far. After a 5 minute search at the powerful Google, I stumbled upon a cool tool that allows me to determine the distance among Canadian cities.

So here we go… (where mentioned trip was made by plane. rest = car)

15th July:
- Saskatoon to Calgary = 376 Miles or 605 Kilometers (Airplane)
- Calgary to Montreal = 2,248 Miles or 3,618 Kilometers (walked…. Just playing…. airplane 😉
18th July

Montreal to Ottawa = 121 Miles or 195 Kilometers

21st July

Ottawa to Montreal = 121 Miles or 195 Kilometers

25th July
- Montreal to Toronto (the city where SARS was) = 339 Miles or 546 Kilometers
- Toronto to Mississagua (where Paulina my friend from S. Africa lives) = no idea 😉 20 minutes by car doing 70 km/h average, you do the maths
27th July

Trip back to Montreal = 339 Miles or 546 Kilometers

3rd August

Back to Ottawa to drop off my brother’s hi-fi and to have a little “chat” with him. = 121 Miles or 195 Kilometers

4th Aug

Trip back by Greyhound = 121 Miles or 195 Kilometers

Time to whip out my calculator…. the total amounts to:6095 km (3788.067122436296 miles)! Wow not bad… I hope to double or triple it by the end of the summer. Just have to get out my trust map of Canada, give a glance at my bank balance, hop onto another greyhound and explore further the east of Canada because next summer, the west side will see me again (I briefly went there during the April break)

Now, you might be wondering what I do to keep myself busy during these long trips. Well, here’s the usual pattern:
- Pray so that I get at the destination in one (alive) piece
- Go to the loo (annoying weak bladder, grr….)
- Chat with the people in the same car or plane
- Look outside the window to see what’s happening out there
- Make myself comfy and sleep (usually half the trip)
- Read a book or write down notes about some business ideas (it seems that most my ideas sneak on me in a car or in the shower)
- More sightseeing
- Get my stuff ready cos once we hit the brakes and the door open up, I don’t waste time, I just hop out and go on about my life
- Find a loo to get rid of the excess luggage :o) But I don’t drop off the kids in public toilets… Of course unless I have to go!
- Thank God to have arrived alive and pray for me not to get lost in the unfamiliar places I find myself in
- Find a phone or a map or a bus stop or a metro station
One thing I must purchase is one of those neck holder thingy because I have this paranoia that one day, I’ll snap my neck when I asleep in moving car.

Yikes, I am getting so busy that I am falling behind in my diary update schedule.

To keep matters mucho short and sweet, I am going to add the highlight of each of the days of the week of the 28st July till
Sunday 3rd.

Monday 28th

Got over my week-end in Toronto. Went to Future Shop to exchange my digital camera because I want a smaller one that can fity in my pocket

Tuesday 29th

Went to the city centre to do some record shopping. I get off the metro take the first right and out of the blue a policeman comes running after me. I think to myself that the cops here are like the ones in SA and that they are gonna give me hell.

It turns out that there is a demonstration going on and the road is closed. So I end up taking other roads and thank goodness did not get lost. Bought a few records as I am trying to rebuild my collection and start sending out demos to promoters.

Mercredi 30th

I don’t really remember what I got up to…

Thursday 31st

Transfered my gym account to the gym in Montreal. The people in Montreal gym are huge but they are only obsessed by themselves only, thank God. This means that I can do my thing without the looks.

We went out in the evening with the crew and I met some interesting people.

Friday 1st

Wow, Time goes by fast! August already! My b-day is around the corner 🙂

We went out again out again.

Sat 2nd

Went to see Ousmane’s soccer game (he’s the goal keeper). They kicked the other team’s butt 10 to nothing! Ousmane is a true champion and he controls the team in an impressive manner

Afternoon, slept all day and tried to catch some sleep. Spend the evening net surfing doing some research.

Did not go out on Saturday

Sunday 3rd August

Missed church because I looked at the wrong bus schedule. Since I am on into pitching into a service half an hour late, I just “laisser tomber”.

Evening, hauled up my borther hi-fi, got into the bus, metro to go meet the guy offering a ride to Hull/Ottawa.

Got to Ottawa at around 7 but sat waiting for my bus until 9. I was not chuffed at all but I just took the time to reflect on life and chat to the Lord in prayers.

Monday 4th

Went to check out Ottawa and took some pics that I will upload very soon. When time came to go meet my ride, the punk did not pitch.

I was pretty upset and Sam (my brother) was laughing at me telling me that maybe it was a sign and I had to stay another night. I refused and asked for directions to the Greyhound station (travel tip: the best people to ask for direction in a foreign city are taxi drivers.) I said cheers to my brother tightned up my backpack and started walking. 20 minutes later, go to the station just when the bust to Montreal was leaving

The people had it stop for me and I hop in after paying double the amount I would usually spend for a lift. 2 Hours later got into Montreal hoped onto a metro underground train, hoped onto another bus and got to my Montreal home just in time as Ousmane was cooking some dish that later tasted so well. To end up the evening, took my clothes to another bud’s flat where I did my laundry and at around 2 AM, I was walking down the streets as if I owned them. For some weird reasons, my best time ever is in the middle of the night when nothing moves

Sat on the net to check out my email log, got time answer some and went to bed at around half past three.

Montreal is so hot that I have never slept with a blanket on and I always leave my balcony door opened.

Pity I have a complex about my legs but it would be better to walk around in shorts.

Monday 4th

Thank you Lord, it’s been 8 months I have been in Canada. So far, I have enjoyed every moment of it, the good and the bad. Even though I really miss my friends from South Africa, I’d rather be here than SA because here life is stable and for the first time in my life, I can really do what I want without my nationality being an issue.

Today went to do some grocery shopping and restarted working on my businesses more seriously because unlike many of my friends here, I am not a student and have to provide for my own means and expensive lifetime dream

So, today is my 8th month in Canada and my 3rd week in Montreal. All is good, I love this city, the people stick their noses in their own businesses and I can live my life incognito which is my ideal. Just need to meet some interesting not the usual boring, married christian 20 something and life will be better because let me tell you something, in this city, the paths to “perdition” (I forgot the english term” are very wide so I need some people to help me stay in check

In a few weeks, I will turn 24! I am seriously getting there! Wow, it feels like yesterday it was my first day of school and I hated (and always have) it already.

My family always says that I am a hard person to purchase a gift for. Well, that’s because I never know what I want… But the one thing I can never get enough of is music. And since I am a DJ, I can never get enough of vinyls or records. Yes, the good old LPs! In case you did not know, most music you listen to still comes out on records first.

Anyway, if you want to get me a gift for my birthday or just because you simply love me or appreciate me or want to impress or seduce me or want me to do some wonders on your website or if you just want to bless me just because you feel like, why don’t you buy me one or more gift certificates from the world’s number one record store?

After a long 6 hours drive to Toronto, I finally landed at my friend’s Paulina doorstep. Now, if you are wondering why I would travel 600 km just to see somebody for a week-end, pay attention…

Paulina was my university buddy at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. We had most lectures together and she went out with a good mate of mine. Along the months we became good friends and one day her dad decided to leave SA to go to Canada.

Fast forward two years when I, myself landed in Canada. I said to myself that it would be cool if I just showed up at Paulina’s door and see the reaction on her cute face. The thought quickly turned into a project and I got in touch with her mother, introduced myself and explained what I was intending to do and asked if she could help me out.

After a couple of phone calls and arrangements, I finally met up with Paulina’s parents at a popular mall in Mississagua where they live. We then drove to their house and I stayed outside while they went inside and told their daughter that there was some dude at the door for her…

When Paulina came to the door she looked and me and what followed almost made me sweat bullets…

I am not good at describing human emotions but to say that she got the suprise (or shock) of her life would be an understatement. She stood there and her face went through the whole rainbow spectrum :o) One thing is for sure though, she was happy to see me and I was very happy to see her too.

After regaining her sense, we jumped into each others arm and we hugged for about 5 minutes and I am sure that the neighbours were wondering what was going on…

We spent a great week-end together sharing our experiences about Canada. She was keen to hear my experience with the freezing cold and she almost was in tears when I shared it. We then spoke about South Africa, South Africans, Canada, Canadians, Quebecois and much much more.

One thing I need to add is that Paulina is a chatterbox by nature and I am the worst :o) In the bus to dinner we were going on and chatting and people were just looking at us. But of course, we did not care at all. She took me to a nice restaurant where I had some Asian dish that was good but of course as you know I never finish my meals so half of it went back (if my dad reads this, he’ll shoot me as he hates wasting of food 😉

Saturday

On Saturday I was still at Paulina’s. I spent the night there. In the morning we went tanning. No, not me because I really don’t need it but she wants to look like me I guess :o). In the afternoon, she made me watch Stigmata, which was not as horrific as I would have expected it to be.

Due the fact that my stay there was a suprise, Paulina already had Sunday plans so she went to bed early and so did I actually because I must say that I was pretty knackered and I am scared of collapsing one of these days.

But for some weird reasons, I could not sleep so I read my book. I am lucky to be in Montreal because I have access to french books. For reasons that I can’t figure out, I can’t read the Bible in English nor fiction. I just have to do it in French because I am more comfortable with it.

But on the flipside, I can’t read business related publications in French because it sounds so strange! Man, I am a freak :o)

Anyway…

Sunday

Since Paulina was gone for the day, I spent the day with her parents and her younger sister who’s so obsessed with Eminem that she makes political extremists look amateurs! We went to Square 1, the supposedly largest mall in Ontario. Now, for me malls are malls and I don’t see them as attractive or interesting. My theory is just to go in, get what I want and bugger off.

Since I was a guest I hanged out with the familiy and man, we walked! the freakin’ mall is really large! I shopped around for DJ headphones, went to look at sneakers but nothing stood out from the selection so I left empty handed.

When we got back I was so tired that I excused myself and had a long nap

At 6, I got up, ate dinner, kissed everybody goodbye, hoped onto my ride and drove the 600 km back to Montreal.

The trip was longer obvsiously and still boring. Thank goodness the sun went down after 9 so I did some reading again until I got tired of using the headlights of cars behind us as lighting…

Got to Montreal about quarter past midnight and suprisingly the city centre was still pumping as if it was Friday night! Hoped onto a bus transfered onto another along the way and got home safe and sound.

For the first time in many years, 3 hours went by without me checking the state of my email box and my business at least once. So at around 2AM, I fired up the net, checked my profits wich were favorable, read my emails and went to bed.

So this week-end was a great success and all went above my expectations.

I just want to take this time to thank the Lord my God for his protection all along the 1200 kms and for blessing me with the funds to undertake this neat operation that will have me sit at my PC to recoup it.

Secondly, big up to the Paulina’s family. Thanks for the great help in the conspirancy as Paulina put it and thanks for the hospitality. If all Polish people are the way you guys are, I am getting myself a Polish woman 🙂 Thanks for introducing me to the cuisine, for showing me around Mississagua. God bless you millions and see you soon!

Paulina, thanks for the time we had and for the conversation. It was truly inspiring and you made me laugh. It’s good to have someone from “home” even if you are 600 kms away! Have fun in Ibiza and take care of yourself.

Thanks Ash, for the ride. Much appreciated. Respect also to the nice couple and other trip companions. Good luck with all your dreams and desires and please do remain joyful, interesting and ambitious. I’ll watch out for you on TV when you hit it big. Just remember me, aight?

Ah yes… One last comment, Future Shop Missisagua sucks. You guys are lucky, you annoyed me on the day when I was in a good mood and could stand your nonsense besides, I am working on being patient so I passed the test. Keep on treating your customers the way you treated me and good luck in the log term of your business. On the flip side, respect to the friendly ladies at the Future Shop on Atwater.

Few days left in Motreal before I move to Hull with my bro. Man, I love this city and the relaxed atmosphere. I just need to find a nice worship place and a percee in the DJ scene and life will be smooth.

That’s all for now, need to do some work because I really want to get myself some records because great music is now available in music stores.

Today, I did purchase my digital camera. Expect some pics as soon as I figure out how to install and use the complimentary software. I also decided to take a trip around Montreal using the underground metro system. I was pretty chuffed with myself as I was able to wander around without getting lost.

Late Thursday Night/ Early Monday Morning 🙂

In the evening, Steph called and wondered if I was keen in getting down at Theraphy’s last appearance at the Jello Bar. After getting there fashionably late, I discover to my suprise that world music flavoured house producer/ DJ Osunlade is in the house. His set did not disappoint as he played some mean bouncy techy house with an afro latin vibe. The place was rocking and so were Steph, Jenny and I. The only trouble was that Osunlade’s records kept skipping which elicited some cheeky remarks from my two friends.

At around quarter to three, Jenny got tired and we all decided to head over to our respective homes. I was amused at seeing Stephanie (who’s very easy on the eye) giving out some random phone number to her “fans”.

Right now, I am awake so early because Ousmane my friend woke me up to give me directions to the meeting point where I will get my tansportation to Toronto where I plan to spend the week-end. As you all know me I am not a morning person so I was half listening to his blabbering. Can’t get back to sleep so I am bloggin instead and listening to online dj music mixes.

Yipee!!!! At last! I will get my Visa card soon. This will enable me to run my e-business smoothly and shop for music that so very essential for a selecta (DJ).

Today, I am doing some song hunting and this Joey Negro remix caught my attention.
